Maurice was convicted of murder, solely based on the testimony of his neighbor, Mary Cobb. She identified Maurice as one of two men shooting at a car. Police had presented her with Maurice handcuffed at her door to receive her testimony. Following his trial, he was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. As a result of her testimony, Mary was given a trip to Disney World, a new apartment, a new job, $1,000 and the key to the city of San Francisco. After more evidence revealed that Maurice was innocent, in December 2010, the San Francisco Superior Court ruled that if Maurice had an effective defense attorney, there was a reasonable probability that the jury would have acquitted Maurice.
