Jonathon Hoffman

Jonathon HoffmanState of Conviction: North Carolina

Race: Black

Wrongful Conviction: Murder

Exonerated Date: 2007

Years Served: 12

Jonathon Hoffman was tried and convicted by an all-white jury despite the fact that no physical evidence connected him to the murder of Danny Cook in 1995. During his first trial, the state’s key witness, Johnell Porter, received immunity from federal charges for testifying against his cousin and received thousands of dollars for his testimony. Neither the defense attorney nor the judge knew of this deal. Porter has since recanted his testimony, stating that he lied in order to get back at his cousin for stealing money from him.
