On losing hope:

It happens to lifers between five and seven years. I guess reality hits you in the face. You lose all hope. You lose everything.

Gloria Killian spent over 17 years for a murder she did not commit. Another suspect to the murder, Gary Masse, had been convicted and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. The day he was sentenced, he called the District Attorney’s office from prison and offered to testify against Gloria, whom he alleged was the mastermind behind the crime. Masse’s sentence was reduced to 25 years. Gloria was tried, convicted, and sentenced to 32 years to life. After ten years a new investigation uncovered the evidence of Masse’s agreement with prosecutors to testify against Gloria in exchange for leniency– a letter sent to the District Attorney stating, “I lied my ass off for you people.”
