In 2002, 17-year-old Brian Banks was wrongfully convicted of rape after a high-school classmate accused Brian of rape and kidnapping. Brian was forced to decide between two options: fighting the charges and risk spending 41 years-to-life in prison, or take a plea deal and spend 5 years of prison and a lifetime of registration as a sex offender. Banks chose the plea deal. Nearly a decade after his parole and conviction, the alleged victim recanted her statements and has acknowledged she fabricated the whole story. As a result, the District Attorney’s Office conceded that Brian was wrongfully convicted in May 2012.
